RL Far East Fund

Fund overview

The Royal London Far East Fund aims to maximise capital growth over the medium to long term by investing in quoted companies across the Asia Pacific and Australasian region.

Manager

Edward Chan began his fund management career in 1993, spending three years managing Far Eastern Funds at Foreign & Colonial Emerging Markets, before taking up his current position at RLAM in 1996. An experienced fund manager, Edward has worked across a number of different fund types including unit trusts and life and pensions assets. He holds a degree and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Imperial College, London.

Investment approach

The manager approaches his fund from a top-down, macroeconomic perspective.  This means that his initial focus is on identifying themes and taking a view on what is currently driving the global economy, before developing his views on the various sectors within the market. This approach, in combination with undertaking detailed research and analysis, allows Edward to identify potential catalysts to drive forward future earnings growth above market expectations.

Once the sectors and themes have been pinpointed he will look for stocks that are most likely to benefit in that given environment. Stock selection is used as the predominant tool in generating performance across the region with an emphasis on earnings momentum and valuation when identifying pricing extremes in these volatile markets.  Special themes will also be incorporated in the sector and stock views when appropriate.
